REf.# 09 0187 ~ Huangshan, Grand Canyon of the West Sea
The name Huangshan or “Yellow Mountain” is commonly thought to have been coined in honor of Huang Di (the Yellow Emperor), a legendary Chinese emperor and the mythological ancestor of the Han Chinese.
The Huangshan mountain range comprises many peaks The three tallest and best-known peaks at slightly over 6000’ are Lotus Peak, Bright Summit Peak, and Celestial Peak . The mountains were formed about 100 million years ago, when an ancient sea disappeared due to an uplifting of the earth. Later, the landscape was shaped by the influence of glaciers. The area is well known for its scenery, sunsets, peculiarly-shaped granite peaks, Huangshan Pine trees, and views of the clouds from above. Huangshan is a frequent subject of traditional Chinese paintings and literature |
