REf.# 77 1447 ~ Mt Jefferson at Dusk, Oregon
The July adventure started out to reach a spectacular view of 10,497' elevation Mt Jefferson (Oregon). To get there one travels the "Skyline Road" from Estacada in the North or Detroit Lake from the South. The road is rough but passable in a vehicle with decent clearance. The trail starts near Breitenbush Lake and climbs about 1500' to 7100' (in about 3.7 miles). The trail winds up the North side of Park Ridge. Jefferson is not visible until one crests the 7100' summit; however, until then the views north toward Mt Hood are wonderful! From the ridge summit is a spectacular view looking over an alpine valley named Jefferson Park. Looking south from the ridge, a formation of lenticular clouds formed as a moist airstream rose to pass over the Cascade Range. Dusk was approaching and a decision was made to "camp" up on the ridge to photograph what might be an incredible sunset about to happen. . . . . . . WOW! After word, the "campgear" proved quite lacking......plugging holes in a previous visitors rock wall; huddling with parkas under a very thin foil space-blanket and dining on a can of "Mug-A-Lunch". Two years later I was invited to exhibit at the Oregon Fair/Photographic Society of America exhibit. Later in a conversation with one of the judges, they said they were considering this photo for top award. However, some of the judges said such an image had to be faked ~ double exposure or something. It wasn't although I did use a polarizing filter. Truth be told it was not even elegable for an award as it was part of a special exhibit. I loved the compliment anyhow. |
