REf.# 80 0921 ~ Dr Pierce Barn, Washington
Many barns at the turn-of-the century became billboards along major travel routes across America. I know of over half a dozen in the Northwest and this one is my favorite. The medicine was also advertised in newspapers all across America. The newspaper ad read: |
“Facts for weak women. Nine-tenths of all the sickness of women is due to some derangement or disease of the organs distinctly feminine. Such sickness can be cured - is cured every day - by Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription. It makes weak women strong, sick women well. It acts directly on the organs affected and is at the same time a general restorative tonic for the whole system. It cures female complaint right in the privacy of home. It makes unnecessary the disagreeable questions, examinations and local treatment so universally insisted upon by doctors and so abhorrent to every modest woman.”
|
The formula for his Favorite Prescription as published by the Pharmaceutical Era’s Formulary contained: savin, cinchona, agaric, cinnamon, water, acacia, sugar, tincture digitalis, tincture of opium, oil star anise and alcohol . . . . . . . . many of which supposedly led to its immense popularity.
