REf.# 92 6126xl ~ Moore Round Barn, Vermont
Built in 1899 near Barnet is this classic New England round barn. The unique design had three levels built around a central silo. The top level was the "hay loft" from which hay could be dropped down to the stalls on the middle level, One might easily guess what was scooped up and sent to the lowest level and "recycled" to fertilize the farmer's fields. The central structure was the silo. Many reasons are attributed to the demise of this design but one explanation I heard from a farmer was the ventilation of the central silo did not allow sufficient ventilation. If the hay was at all wet it began to ferment making the entire barn a bit unpleasant. |
